Growing Hope: Michael’s Inspiring Journey with Cardinal Kids

Here is a remarkable story of resilience, compassion, and the power of specialized care. Meet Michael, a vibrant 10-year-old boy whose journey with Carolina Caring’s Cardinal Kids Program has touched the hearts of many and exemplifies the transformative impact of comprehensive pediatric palliative care.

Despite facing the challenges of a serious illness, Michael’s zest for life shines through in everything he does. His love for Pokémon, bike rides, and school is only surpassed by his passion for gardening—a hobby he shares with his mother, Petra. This green-thumbed duo has turned their backyard into a haven of fruits and vegetables, with Michael eagerly sharing his harvest with the Cardinal Kids care team during their visits.

Michael’s determination is evident in his latest project: growing an orange tree from seeds he saved from a fruit he enjoyed. It’s this spirit of nurturing life and finding joy in simple pleasures that defines Michael’s approach to his own journey.

Michael’s journey with Cardinal Kids began in September 2023 when he was referred to the program by his specialty providers Dr. David Gass and Dr. Katrina Gleditsch, from Atrium Health, due to a brain tumor that was severely affecting his quality of life. Symptoms such as weight loss, hallucinations, and difficulty tolerating feeds led to frequent hospitalizations. Despite wanting to attend school and live a normal life, the side effects of his treatments made it nearly impossible for him to do so.

The impact was profound. With the team’s support, Michael returned to school and his beloved garden, reclaiming the childhood experiences that mean so much to him. Even as his condition progressed, necessitating a transition to hospice care in March 2024, the Cardinal Kids team remained steadfast in their commitment to Michael and his family.

The Cardinal Kids Program’s success with Michael stems from their comprehensive approach, addressing not just medical needs but the overall well-being of the child and family:

  1. Nutritional Support: Recognizing food’s importance in Michael’s life, the team, especially nurse Mary, focused on managing his nausea. This allowed Michael to enjoy eating again and gave him the energy to pursue his gardening passion, including planting his favorite yellow watermelon.
  2. Medication Management: Through close collaboration with Michael’s specialists, the team tailored a medication regimen that controlled his symptoms while allowing him to attend school and engage in his favorite activities.
  3. Emotional Support: Understanding that illness affects the whole family, the team arranged play therapy for Michael and his younger sister. This support helped address the emotional needs of all family members, bringing peace and balance to their home.

Nurse Practitioner Kayla reflects on the profound lessons learned from Michael: “He has taught me the value of being present. Whether I’m learning about Pokémon, picking vegetables in the garden, or hearing about his day at school, I’ve learned that my purpose is found in simply being there.”

This philosophy of presence and compassion is at the heart of the Cardinal Kids Program, making a significant difference in the lives of children like Michael and their families.

Petra, Michael’s mother, expresses deep appreciation for the care her son receives: “The Cardinal Kids team gives him the best attention and care. They are always there when we need them. They even helped us get Michael’s nausea medication when the pharmacy wanted to charge us $2,000. They always go above and beyond.”

As Michael continues his journey, the Cardinal Kids team remains a constant source of support, care, and hope. His story illuminates the profound impact of comprehensive pediatric palliative care—a beacon of light for families navigating the challenges of serious illness.

Michael’s journey with Cardinal Kids at Carolina Caring is more than a story of medical care; it’s a testament to the power of compassion, the importance of quality of life, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. As he tends to his garden, sharing his harvests and his joy, Michael reminds us all of the beauty and resilience that can bloom even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
