What is Palliative Medicine?
Palliative medicine is a specialized service offered when someone has been diagnosed with an advanced illness. This type of supportive care focuses on comfort, counseling and education. Its aim is to relieve suffering whether or not a disease can be cured.
Palliative medicine is provided in patients’ homes as well as hospitals, long-term care facilities, assisted living centers, outpatient clinics and more.
How is Palliative Care Different Than Hospice?
While both palliative care and hospice focus on symptom relief, palliative care often begins at diagnosis and hospice begins after treatment has stopped – usually in a patient’s last six months of life.
